Prof. Dr Denis Scuto

Project leader

Denis Scuto is the Deputy Director of the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH). He studied history at the Centre Universitaire de Luxembourg and the Université Libre de Bruxelles and is currently Associate Professor for Contemporary History of Luxembourg at the University of Luxembourg. He completed his PhD in 2009 at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Since 2008 he has been a national expert at the European Union Global Citizenship Observatory (GLOBALCIT), located at the European University Institute in Florence. His research interests lie in the history of the nation-state as a threefold integration process (national, social, transnational), the history of Luxembourg during Second World War, migration and citizenship history, and labour history and industrial heritage in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. He is also known for his many contributions to the public debate about contemporary history and uses of the past in Luxembourg since the 1990s.

Dr. Nina Janz

Postdoctoral researcher

Nina Janz served as Co-PI and Coordinator of the WARLUX project from 2020 to 2023. Her research interests include the military history of World War II, digital history and memory culture. She previously worked as a Research Associate at the Research and Educational Centre for Oral History at the Voronezh Institute of High Technologies (VIHT) and at the AICGS at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC. She was also a Research Associate at the German Historical Institute Moscow, where she worked on the project “Soviet Prisoners of War under German Custody”. Her publications mainly focus on the Wehrmacht/WWII and biographical and digital analysis. From September 2023, she will be working as an MCSA Fellow at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, on a project that involves a transnational comparison of war experiences in the German armed forces during World War II.

Sarah Maya Vercruysse

Doctoral researcher

Sarah Maya Vercruysse studied history at KU Leuven, Belgium. Since 2020 she has been working as a doctoral researcher for the WARLUX project at the C²DH at the University of Luxembourg. Her PhD focuses on the war experiences of the families and communities of Luxembourgish recruits, with a particular emphasis on the National Socialist regime’s supportive and coercive actions towards them.
